As you can see, the Friary is located right at the water's edge, which presumably made travel easier. All of Ireland's diocese have a link to the sea (some via the Shannon) so that clerics could arrive in Ireland from the continent by boat.In this picture, the bay leads to the sea on the left of the picture (the Killala side) and on the righthand side (the inland side), the bay narrows towards Ballina.
