On the evening of Monday, 17th November, there was an aurora visible in the sky in the early evening. Actually, the aurora continued for most of the night but cloud began to gather from the east by 9pm, obscuring it in the west. All of the photographs were taken using a Canon G3 digital camera, with a shutter speed of 15 seconds and an aperature of around F3.5. All of the images were captured as JPEGS and received no post-processing at all. The colours look a bit more vivid in the photographs than they seemed to the naked eye - the vivacity is a function of the length of exposure. The camera allows the ISO setting to be changed at any time - the first two photographs in the series were shot as ISO400 which is why they seem a bit brighter (and grainy) - the rest were shot as ISO50 pictures.
The photographs were taken at the 35mm setting of the camera's zoom lens. I shot a number of photographs on a film camera using a 19mm wide angle using ISO100 Fuji Sensia film. I won't get those photos back for a couple of weeks. However, Fuji film is rather contrasty, and my film scanner doesn't handle extreme contrast very well, so I'm not expecting the same quality from them as from the JPEGs.
